Archaea in der Biotechnologie

Abstract

Archaea are prokaryotic organisms with highly interesting physiologi-cal features. They have also shown potential for the production of biotechnological compounds. Today, the commercially available pro-ducts of archaea are bacterioruberin, squalene, bacteriorhodopsin, andlipids – all of which are produced by utilizing halophilic archaea. Otherproducts include carotenoids, bioplastics, molecular hydrogen, and methane. Here we give a brief an overview of the current state of Archaea biotechnology.
