Abstract

The kinase mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is acentral regulator of cellular metabolism and growth. While mTORC1 promotes growth under favourable conditions, mTORC1 inactivation is critical during starvation. We discovered that mTORC1 antagonizes starvation responses by preventing cells from feeding on extracellular proteins, as happens in nutrient-poor tumors. Thus, whether mTORC1promotes or antagonizes growth depends on a cell’s metabolic environment.
